This paper is an ideological criticism of transcendence in public debate caused by Pre-Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Shen Fu-hsiung ’s urging the ruling party should not continue to use ethnic issues pertaining to a Taiwanese national identity as a campaign theme in the year-end legislative elections. Inspired by "rhetoric of transcendence", this paper aims to unearth how opposing political camps ’ have been depending heavily upon argument from the comparative point of quantity, quality, value, and hierarchy to establish their positions on fundamental issues (i.e., culture, rights, reality, and master narrative), to attack one another, and to defend themselves. This paper ends with discussions of the theoretical meaning of an ideological criticism of transcendence and suggestions for potential research directions in the future.
