This research is a framing analysis of the related news reports about the conflicted/non-conflicted events aroused by the visit of Chen Yun Lin, Chief of ARATS in China. Three newspapers in Taiwan—China Times, Liberty Times, and United Daily News—are analyzed by two research methods: content analysis and discourse analysis. In content analysis, researcher discovered that different newspapers have different tendencies toward producing news texts. China Times and United Daily News tend to adopt positive, tame, and approving attitudes when reporting non-conflicted events, while Liberty Times tends to frame the events by negative, suspecting, and even opposing attitudes. In conflicted events, China Times and United Daily News adopt the explanation of the authority and government, while Liberty Times regards the protestors as rightful citizens and emphasizes the freedom of speech as a democratic value. In discursive analysis, two frames are induced according to the discoveries of content analysis: government frame and anti-government frame. The frames are related to different national identities existed in Taiwan. The national identity hidden behind the government frame is constructed by the lawful sanction of the violent deeds; while the national identity behind the anti-government frame is established by the revolt against the violent government.
