It is generally viewed that researchers in mainland China have made few contribution to theoretical building in communication field among Chinese research community. In order to explore the reasons that accounted for this phenomenon, this paper analyzes how the control of political ideology functioned in academic system of mainland China. This paper adopts academic rationality and autonomy as theoretical frame and takes researchers in mainland universities and research institutes as objects. Documentary analysis and in-depth interview are employed as research methods in this study. This paper reveals how political ideology exists and exerts its influence in various aspects of communication academic system. In addition, this paper suggests that research community in mainland Chinese may choose not to participate in certain academic activities or strategic interactions with the academic system, so as to realize flexible breakthrough with the changing social control in mainland China.
