This study analyzes the aesthetic response of audiences appreciating wordless
picturebooks from the perspective of aesthetic communication. The communication
process can be assessed according to the inviting structure and readers’ interpretation
process.
For the inviting structure, most of the examples used in this study are
picturebooks that received the Caldecott Medal or the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
A narrator can use the image syntax and sequence to balance the consistency and
continuity of the images. The referential system or context that readers associate with
masterpieces increases their enjoyment and appreciating of picturebooks. When
viewing pictures, readers can switch between different frames and pages to interpret
the causal relationships that form the story.
Because wordless picturebooks do not have anchor text or determinate answers,
they provide readers with room to imagine. Readers must recreate the story every time
they read a picturebook, which enables readers and authors to co-construct pictorial
narratives and aesthetic experiences.
Keywords: inviting structure, children’s literature, aesthetic response, imagination,
pictorial narrative
