As a key topic of communication research, transmedia narrative enables a narrator to achieve transposition by presenting materials using various media platforms. Transmedia adaptation is the conversion of an original work into multiple media platforms. The person who adapts the story must employ conversion mechanisms, dialog quotations, or simulacra to reconstruct the original narrative structure. Intermediality plays a key role in the adaptation process, in which the storyteller can determine the similarities among symbols, plots, or art forms and enable the adaptation to echo and engage in cross-reference with the original work.

In addition to focusing on intermediality, researchers of transmedia adaptation endeavor to understand how multiple aesthetic responses can be generated from the audience following adaptation. By considering the pictorial turn, this study employed picture-book adapted animation as an example of intermediality to understand the following:

From the perspective of the exchange process, the process of audiences filling blanks involves the intermediality of employing the visual performance of the original work and construting intratextual factors. Therefore, the process of transmedia conversion involves the interpretations of the storyteller, the use of intermediality, and the reconstruction of inviting structures. Audiences can employ intermediality to generate narrative expectations and initiate the process of filling blanks.
