This study examined the contradictions of closeness and distance that exist in family relationships. Based upon relational dialectical theory (Baxter & Montgomery, 1996), the study examined the personal narratives of 28 Taiwanese LGBTQ individuals to understand why they chose to remain closeted in their family, how and why they reported having a close family relationship while engaging in behaviors that indicate otherwise, and how they accounted for such contradictions. The in-depth interview data was analyzed using constant comparative technique and multivocality discourse analysis technique. The results showed there were multiple meanings of closeness to the participants. Also, they were able to resort to functional ambiguity— a mental process that reconciles contradictory forces as compatible in one’s relationship— to avoid mental discomfort or behavioral change. The study proposed a model of functional ambiguity based on the analysis of the personal accounts to understand how people deal with relational dialectics.
