When coming out does not make you out: A grounded theory of coming out to family for Taiwanese LGB individuals

This study used a Taiwanese lesbian, gay, and bisexual sample to establish a grounded theory of coming out to family. It reconceptualized coming out to reflect the nuances in LGB family relationship that are missed when coming out is conceptualized as disclosure. The grounded theory (Charmaz, 1995) found the core category to be scaffolding for a stable family relationship, with three key propositions. First, the LGB persons and their parents have their set of expectations for personal and family life; as long as the two sets of expectations are discrepant, involved parties will try various scaffolding efforts to reconcile. Second, the scaffolding efforts, which may or may not serve the purpose of reconciliation, turn the process into an iterative one. Third, the iterative process of scaffolding is influenced by a host of internal and external factors, and each impact how the coming out process turns out to be.
