The purpose of this paper has been to examine the possibility of combining the two
subjects of retirement and life stories. After reviewing a series of literature works
on “retirement,” mostly in the areas of social gerontology, the paper discusses the
meaning of life stories and traces its origins and interdisciplinary specialities. A
theoretical proposal is then proposed in the final section trying to link the research
traditions of retirement and life story since narrating each retiree’s own stories
should have the advantages of sharing experiences and exchanging life values.
