This article uses Susan Sontag's theory of Illness as metaphor to take the movie Dying to Survive as an example to try to explore the complex mentality of thinking cancer in modern society. Through analyzing the images of four typical cancer patients in the film, this study believes that cancer is regarded as a symbol of shame and that there are contradictions in related cognition. At the same time, the film reflects the process of depriving cancer patients of their power. This study points out how ordinary society, represented by pharmaceutical company and governments, squeeze on diseased citizens from both the physical and the economic perspectives.
