During the early period of Japanese rule, Chiayi played a passive role in implementing medical policies under colonialism in the establishment of modern medicine. As the number of Taiwanese doctors trained by the government gradually increased, a professional group called "Chiayi Medical Association" consisting solely of Taiwanese was established in 1927 and separated from the former medical association led by Japanese. After independence, Chiayi Medical Association published "Chiayi Medical Journal" from 1934 to 1939, which was the only local medical professional journal on this island at that time. The uniqueness of this journal lies not only in publishing medical papers but also including Chinese poetry, current affairs commentary and miscellaneous essays to record how Taiwanese doctors in Chiayi felt under changing colonial circumstances. This article will explore how they used their writing through magazine articles as an intermediary between traditional and modernity under colonial modernity while adapting to changes during their identity as Taiwanese doctors with relevant literature and written records from that periodical. Through an examination of the Chiayi Medical Association Journal, this article uses media practice as an analytical perspective to understand various cultural interactions and influences in colonial society. It was found that the Taiwanese physician community included various social networks such as local families, Han poetry societies, and the Taiwan Cultural Association in their professional organization process, which also encompassed medical technology networks at that time. In their interaction with various social practices, they embodied their complex and diverse social identities and demonstrated flexibility in their identity strategies. The Chiayi Medical Association Journal is highlighted as a special and important local and ethnic medium that plays a role in connecting different social levels and ideologies under colonialism. It also reveals the role played by the journal in shaping Chiayi's regional identity, as well as differences and connections between it and national journals.
