For these years, the tendency that probes the medium contents and mass communication by the way of discourse analysis has been increasing. However, when researcher checked the research documents which use the same title “discourse”, he often found the totally different analysis stratagems. This thesis starts with the different definitions on discourse from two mass communication research thesauruses, then compares and contrasts the different operation stratagems on the discourse analysis of the two mass communication research documents. Afterwards, traces the language context behind the different discourse analyses, the outcome appears to be that the most important two language traditions that influenced discourse analyses are Saussure’s structuralism and Hilliday’s functionalism. After dealing with the linguistics’ background, this research checks separately the different discourse analyses under the influences of the two different traditions. First, probes the discourse analyses under the structuralism and post –structuralism, especially takes French thinker, Foucault, as a mainstay focusing on his theory of discourse. Then, discusses several perspectives of the critical discourse analyses that are deeply influenced by the functionalism linguistics, and especially probes the writings of two typical scholars Fowler and Van Dijk and their examples of applications on the study of mass communication. Finally, this thesis takes a simple comparison and contrast on the same name discourse analysis of study stratagem under these two different comprehensions to probe the interaction and dialogues behind their academic association. Moreover, takes a simple check of the transplantations and developments on Chinese’s mass communication. Through the way of discourse analysis, I hope this thesis provides certain help to relative direction of study in our country.
