Face and Talk—An Exploratory Research of The Face Factor in Spiral of Silence

沉默螺旋討論了由於害怕孤立而形成民意的模式，本研究從文化觀點切入，探討其在東方文化中，扣除害怕孤立因子以外，面子如何影響發表己見的過程。結合沉默螺旋理論與心理學中對華人社會面子的討論作為分析依據，運用問卷調查的方法，探究在發表意願中的面子與關係因素。研究發現：面臨爭議性議題，「關係」的親疏遠近也為表達意願的變項之一，且進一步與面子量表進行相關性檢驗，顯示對於面子越重視者，越是會在疏遠的關係中表達己見。

Spiral of silence discussed the model that public opinion are affected by people ’s fears of isolation. From a viewpoint on culture, this study talks about how the "face" affects people ’s desire of speaking out their viewpoints in oriental culture. Through questionnaire survey method, we tried to find and analyze the face and the relationship factors in the desire of sharing one ’s opinion and the relationship between them.

The result shows that while facing a controversial issue, the relationship with others is one of the factors that affect people to express themselves or not. Besides, correlating with the face scale, we can say that the more people pay attention to face, the more they would like to speak their view
in a far relationship group.
