This essay explores the relationship between men and space, also examines the cultural process of space representation. A case description of public space " Ketegalan boulevard" in Taipei is used to illustrate discussion about the subject.
The perspective of communication which is originated from human behavior, is regarded as the article ’s standpoint. The author tries to explain " the creating of meanings and the sharing of messages" in cultural process through it. In the cultural process which is full of meaning, space is not only a reflection of society but also one of society ’s fundamental material dimension and cultural symbol. Several topics of culture study are discussed: 1. collective memory, 2. power, and 3.communication, culture, and space. It is argued that identities are constructed not only in interaction with other actors, but also in dialogue with material culture & spatial representation . It is concluded that there is a dialogue between historical individuals. It reveals that human subjectivity is externalized in objectified social products and ,in turn, the objective reality acts back on subjectivity, influencing and even constructing it.
